~1999~

Jeff sat up against the wall of one of the numerous hallways in the arena. He let his head rest up against the wall, his head throbbing painfully and blood poured down his face. He reached up and touched it, the tips of his fingers were stained a dark red. He winced and uttered a small groan. It wasn't from a match, it was from one very strong punch, a meeting of the minds with the locker room door, and a good hard stomp on the back.

He was trying to protect Debra- a task that was so much harder by himself. No matter what punch he threw they never seemed to damage Austin. It was fighting a loosing battle- but seeing the deep, ugly bruise on her face made him rage. He hated the way she cringed in the makeup chair when they covered it up. He hated how Austin made something he had never seen before from Debra- he made her feel small when before she knew she could walk beside any man and stand tall.

He looked down at his torn Don't Piss Me Off! shirt, peeling it off his body to press to the blood on his head. His sunglasses were still in the locker room from when he and Austin squared off- broken no doubt and splattered with his own blood. Nobody else helped. Whomever was in that locker room didn't lift a finger. It was like nothing was happening. The men just scattered- as if they were too afraid of damaging their careers for going against Austin.

Jeff let his shoulders slump, the cool wall pressing against his back made him feel some what better. A couple of wrestlers were heading his way toward the locker room, but he didn't care. He stared off at the wall in front of him, angry and upset as he used his ruined shirt to wipe up the blood now staining his cheeks and nose.

Kurt didn't feel at home here in the WWE. Because of his amateur background, he was use to real wrestling. When he had to be scripted and was going to walk into a match, knowing he was going to lose, it hurt. On top of that, the backstage roster had done nothing but pick on him. He felt like the odd man out. The worst person about it though, was Stone Cold Steve Austin. Everyone thought he was a nice man. Nice man Kurt's ass. He was an ass, a bastard, a wife beater. And Kurt couldn't stand it. But he was the new guy, what was he supposed to do. Luckily, he did have two good friends in Adam Copeland (better known as Edge) and Christian (better known as Jay Reso).

That's where he was right now, walking out of the cafeteria area with his two good friends. As they made their way down the hall way, Kurt's eyes rested on someone sitting against the wall of a the backstage area. They looked pretty beat up and it wasn't until he was closer that Kurt could tell who it was: Jeff Jarett. Now, Kurt didn't know Jeff (or as he had heard some of the backstage crew refer to him, Double J) but he knew that he wasn't a bad person. "Mr. Jarett are you alright?" Kurt asked, kneeling down next to him.

Jeff looked up at the other man. Kurt Angle- he knew who he was. He hadn't met him before, but everyone was talking about him; the Olympian who got his gold medal with a broken neck. He never really had the chance to introduce himself, but that was in part to Jeff not wanting to actually talk to anyone backstage anymore. What was happening to Debra was wrong, and he was the only one who was trying to stand up to Austin for what he was doing.

His face was still a mess, blood staining his cheeks as it ran down from the cut on his forehead. He shook his head. "No. I ain't alright." He said quietly. He didn't want it to come off as rude, but he was mad. He was sick of this crap with Austin, but that didn't mean it was alright to take it out on Kurt either when he was just checking up on him. Jeff took in a breath and slowly let it out. "I got myself into a fight I couldn't win, but had no choice in fightin' it." He muttered. "Jus' like everyday a the week."

A sour frown crossed Kurt's face. He had never said more than two words to the man his entire career which, while very short, was still a career none-the-less. He could clearly tell that someone had decided to use Jeff like their own personal punching bag but he couldn't tell why they would want to hurt him. Everyone always spoke about how kind Jeff was, about how he looked after the green guys who didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground in the company. "Um...if you don't mind me asking, who did this to you?"

Kurt removed his shirt, balling it up and dabbing at the blood that was drenching Jeff's face. Sure the man probably didn't want his help but he was more than eager to offer it.

Jeff looked at Kurt for awhile. The other man hadn't been here that long. He wouldn't know all that was going on with Debra- he hadn't been here long enough to see it. He didn't fight the shirt or Kurt helping him. He was too weak, and it was good to see someone still cared.

"Austin." He said simply. "It was Austin. I'm sure your buddy can tell ya stories, but he married my best friend. An' beats the crap outta her." He choked out, feeling so hopelessly frustrated. "I try to help her, I try to fight him but I can't- I ain't... strong enough." He let his shoulders fall, his pride draining out of him as fast as he was losing blood. "Look what he did to me!" Jeff grabbed Kurt's shoulders, leaving bloody smears on the other man's skin. "What do ya'll think he does to her! Christ." He muttered as his tears pricked at his blue eyes. "...Sorry. It ain't right to dump this on you." He said trying to get up to his feet. His legs gave out from him being too light headed, forcing him back down into the sitting position he was in.

Though Kurt could feel the blood on his arms from Jeff's hands, he didn't let it bother him. What did bother him, however, were the words spilling from Jeff's mouth. He had thought the rumors about Austin being a wife beater were actually just that, rumors. People liked to start things about other people, it was the same in any work place or locker room. But to hear that one of the major stars of your industry has such a dark past, it was dispicable. He swallowed down a few words of hatred, chosing instead to focus on the man who was slightly losing conciousness in front of him. Hooking one arm around his waist and raising one of Jeff's arms so it was hooked around his shoulders, Kurt helped Jeff up. He wasn't as heavy as he thought he would be.

"Well worry about that in a second,' Kurt nodded solomnly, almost as if it were a promise, "First off lets get you somewhere where they can look after that gushing wound of yours."

Jeff was dead weight on Kurt, and he was trying so hard not to be. It seemed as if the other man didn't have a problem with the extra weight, but still- he felt guilty. His legs felt like jelly from the light-headed feeling taking over his body. He let out a slow, steady sigh as he tried to fight his head spinning. "Mmmph. Kurt... thanks. I appreciate this, all a your help. Not many people ever bother to help 'round these parts." He drawled out.

"M'sorry for alla this." He slurred. "You're a good man, Kurt. You're... helpin' me... I don't wanna bring anything on ya'll for helpin' me." No one helped Jeff, just like no one helped Debra. No one wanted to go against Austin, lest they be buried forever in the low card, jobbing for the rest of their career. Jeff was there already- booked in stupid feuds with no chance at the title. He clung tighter to him, afraid his legs were going to go out on him. "Sorry I jus'- I didn't think I lost that much blood."

Kurt shook his hair. He didn't care about his career so much, there was always someplace else that would need him. What he did care about was the well being of another human being: both Debra and Jeff. He didn't care what he would have to do to get Austin fired but he knew he would try whatever it took. "Your a good guy Jeff. I bet somewhere out there, you have someone who cares about you. Screw Vince. Screw what he has to say about that bastard Austin.'

Realizing that he doesn't know his way around backstage he looks at Jeff, "You...you know you have to tell me where the medics office is..."

"I did have that, Kurt." His thoughts drifted to Owen, his best friend next to Debra- one third of their group was gone. He winced at the ache in his heart and willed it away, Kurt's voice bringing him back. Jeff blinked at him. "I thought ya'll knew where ya were goin'." He said and then cracked a smile. "It's..." He paused, trying to remember where they were setting it up. "It's right there." He broke off from Kurt, heading toward the door on the left. "I can... handle it from here, Kurt. But why don't ya meet me in the hotel bar tonight..? I'll buy dinner, seein' as how ya'll went out of your way to help me." He held onto the door frame. "An' I don't have anyone I can go out with no more. I'd love some company. Sound good?"

Kurt frowned, sticking his hands which were slightly sticky with his blood into his pockets. "I'll meet you, it sounds like a good time." Truth was, hanging out with Jay and Adam all the time was fun but he needed to get to know new people. And Jeff surely was exciting. He was something that Kurt wasn't use to, something wonderful, even if he was covered in blood. But he couldn't worry about that right now. Right now he was going to confront Austin about what he had done.

Steve was busy in the locker room, cleaning Jeff's blood off of his knuckles. Debra was sitting on the bench, pressing an ice pack to her face where he had hit her- the blow that set off the whole fight. Jeff was escorting Debra back to the locker room. Steve didn't appreciate that at all. He smacked Debra first, for not knowing better which set Jeff off. The blonde man tried his best to fight back, but Steve had a lot of advantages over the smaller man. One of them being strength. One hard enough shove sent Jeff backward over the bench and into the lockers. Steve pressed his face into the metal, the vents catching the soft flesh on Jeff's forehead- which was enough to cut him open.

The fight went down hill for Jeff from there. Austin's punch deepened the cut, as blood poured down his face. He tried to fight back, but caught Austin's elbow in the face. He shook out his hand- it was still stinging from the blow. He scrubbed more blood from his hands- enough of it was still splattered on his forearms, along with the smears on the lockers and the broken sunglasses on the floor. "I told your little friend to not hang 'round you. But no one ever listens back here."

Debra didn't say anything, quietly reaching down to pick up Jeff's broken sunglasses, playing with the frames in her freehand.

Kurt paced the locker room, not knowing what to do. He wanted to confront Austin, he really did. But he wasn't sure if he would just hurt Jeff even worse. He didn't know how to deal with women who were being abused. He didn't know if it would make Austin angrier and cause him to hurt Debrah more. All he knew was that he wanted Jeff to be happy, for some unknown reason, he wanted to make Jeff happy. There was something about that sad face...

Knocking on the door, Kurt took a deep breath, preparing himself for the situation.

Steve looked at Debra, wondering if she had called someone- or if it was management coming to check up on the situation. Regardless it was going to be swept under the rug, and he had already ruined Jeff's career- he'd never get a main event push if he remained in the WWF. "Stay there."

Debra nodded, silently hoping if it was Jeff, that'd he'd just go away. Austin already was in a mood and she didn't want to see him getting busted up further.

Steve opened the door, the blood evidence still on his arms and hands. He gave Kurt a surprised look. "Angle? What the hell do you want?"

Kurt took a deep breath before he started, "You to stop hitting your wife. Jeff told me about what went down! How can you dare to call yourself a champion and a hero to the WWF fans if you hit a poor innocent lady!?" He made his way into the room, standing in front of Debrah and pulling her up behind himself so that he could protect her if need be. "I want you to admit to Vince that you beat Debra and I want you to help Jeff build his career. Now."

Steve looked at Kurt for a long time, trying to decide if this guy was real or not. He was only in the WWF for a few months and he thinks he can ask that of the biggest star of the Attitude Era? Who did he think was anyway? Torn between laughing and punching Kurt in the face, he decided to play along with him. He rubbed his chin and nodded. "I see your point Kurt. An' you're right. I shouldn't be wailin' on Debra, an' I do feel bad about that. It's the roids. They mess with ya." He frowned, and that was the truth. He didn't want to hit his wife, he felt god awful afterward but he couldn't stop once the anger started. "I promise I'll go talk to McMahon about Jeff. Not that'll do any good, I believe he's not re-signing. Might want to go check on that Angle."

Kurt didn't know how to react. Steroids? That seemed like it could be truthful. But then again he knew that Austin HAD hurt a woman and he didn't know who in their right mind would hit a woman. On the other hand he felt like he had made a promise to Jeff. He had to get Debra out of there. He kept a hold of her hand, "I will," he nodded, "And I bet Debra would want to talk to him too."

He turned his back to the bigger man, Debra still in front of him, and began to walk to the room where he had left Jeff.

"I'm sure she would." Austin said as he watched Kurt take his wife out of the room. It didn't matter, she would be back. She always came back, no matter what she said, and he knew damn well. Whatever Kurt did, or said, he didn't have the power that Steve had backstage- his word was gold and Vince knew it.

"Ya shouldn'a done that." Debra said quietly once they were out of the room. "He's jus' gonna be nasty about it. Ya don't understand how he is."

-

Back in the trainer's room, the trainer had Jeff patched up. The blonde was at the sink, washing the blood from off his face- the cut sealed by butterfly bandages and covered with a large band-aid. His face was a bit swollen, but that was fine- some ice would do after that. Once they were done with him he left the trainer's office, a bag over his shoulder.

Kurt sighed, "I won't let him hurt you okay? There are certain things that a man shouldn't do to a woman. Hitting them is one of those things. If he hits you, maybe he doesn't love you like you think he does." He was adamant. The one thing he hated was the fact that men sometimes hit women. It was a sign of cowardice and the one thing a man was supposed to be for a woman wasn't a coward. He led her by the hand, taking her into the trainers room with a smile on his face, "Jeff, I brought you some company!"

"I know Kurt." She placed her hand on his shoulder, smiling gently at him. Her face still hurt, but since she was away from Austin, she could check on Jeff- who was looking worse for wear when she was dragged off by her irate husband earlier. "Believe me, I know." She followed with Kurt, spying Jeff instantly. She ran over to him and hugged him.

Jeff hugged her back, sighing in relief. His face was killing him, but he didn't say a word about it knowing how much pain she was. "Hey babe- how are ya'll?"

"I'm okay Jeff. Kurt came an' got me." She said and slowly pulled away from him. She gently put her hand on his face, looking at all the bruising on him. "Oh Jeff." Debra frowned.

"S'okay, Debra- It'll heal." He grinned a bit. "Where ya'll gonna go tonight?"

"I'm gonna go stay with Jackie." She said with a nod. "I better get goin'. I... I don't want to hang 'round here much." Debra ran a hand through her hair nervously, not wanting people to see her bruised up face. "Kurt, Jeff- thank ya so much." She leaned over and kissed their cheeks, quickly making her way down the hallway toward the woman's locker room to look for Jackie.

Jeff turned to Kurt. He wasn't sure what to say. No one ever tried to help them before. He chewed on his busted lip, instantly regretting that action, and then looked up to Kurt with his blue eyes. Without a word he reached out and hugged the other man hard.

Kurt was shocked by the hug. No one had ever really hugged him before. Sure, he had friends who hugged him but...this felt different. This felt like it was an actual hug from someone who could be more. But he wasn't going to be stupid about it. He knew that Jeff was probably happily married and the last thing he needed was the boys in the back to think he was gay. Kurt stepped away for a minute, "No problem. I was just doing what any good friend would do."

"Good friend?" Jeff said skeptically as Kurt pulled away- he couldn't help but question it. He knew Kurt briefly, but before today they had never spoken. Still, he knew better than to seem ungrateful because he appreciated EVERYTHING Kurt just did for them. "Yeah." He smiled. "Thanks again. Not many people would well... help us. Are we still on for drinks at the hotel...?" Jeff was married for a bit, but lost his wife to sickness a few years ago- since then he hadn't dated. "...Ah, unless ya'll don't want to get a couple of drinks with me. I know I'm not the kinda guy people don't like to be 'round." He said with a bit of a shrug. He had alienated himself by standing up to Austin- and the rumors about his sexuality dogged him to no end- despite being married and linked to some of wrestling's most beautiful women. The truth was, he did like men- but it wasn't something he liked being broadcasted out. He fiddled with the strap of his bag over his shoulder, looking sheepish. "I'll understand if ya don't."

Kurt smiled and nodded, "Of course we're still on for the hotel. You still hurt to bad and want me to drive or what?" Truth of the matter was that Kurt had always felt more attracted to men than women. He had never explored those feelings but deep down he knew that he was gay. He had heard the rumors about old Jeff Jarett liking men more than women but he expected them to be part of the backstage controversy. It seemed like only a handful of people liked Jeff. And Kurt? Well he was turning into one of those handfuls that would bend over backward to make him happy.

"Naw Kurt, I'll be okay. They fixed me up pretty good in there." He said with a shrug. "I'll be alright to drive an' get to the hotel. I'll meet up with ya in 'bout an hour. I want to take shower an' put on clean clothes." He patted Kurt's shoulder. "I'll meet ya at the bar." And with that Jeff quickly headed out of there- wanting to shower the remainder of the dried blood from off of his body.

-

About an hour later, Jeff appeared at the bar wearing a pair of light blue jeans and a button up white shirt. He had his sleeves rolled up a bit past the middle of his forearms, wearing a bracelet on one wrist. He made himself comfortable at the bar, yawning slightly. The shower felt good- there was nothing worse than dried blood sticking to a body. He glanced at his watch, ordering himself a beer while he waited for Kurt.

It had taken Kurt a long time to find the hotel, an even longer time to get to his room, and an even longer time to get Adam Copeland to shut up long enough so that he could change into something that didn't smell like sweat after his shower. He made a mental note that it was going to be laundry day soon and he changed into a pair of black slacks and a nice blue buttno up t-shirt. He made his way down to the hotel bar and smiled when he saw Jeff.

"Hey man, you look wonderful!" Kurt smiled widely.
